When you install Win8, it will ask you to create a password for your account. Some of you may create it, some not. In any case, later you may need to create/change the password for your account. And as you can see, is no longer listed on the User Account options in the Control Panel.

So the question remains, how do you create or change your password? Well, first of all you need to hover your mouse over the right upper corner of your window and open the Settings.

Once there, select the Users tab > Create a password.

Once created, the option will be replaced with Change your password.

To delete the password, just change it, BUT, leave the field of New Password empty.

One of the things I miss the most of Win7 is the capability of just pressing the Windows Key and clicking on Computer without the need to minimize all my open Windows. Now, Windows 8 does not have this option; you can open the Explorer, but not Computer directly. A good thing is that you can create a shortcut for yourself. Check how.

First, we need to go where all the Shortcuts from Start are. This is:

C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

In there, right click on a black space > New > Shortcut.

Now, we’re going to make a shortcut for explorer.exe, but with a little flag to change the target.

C:\Windows\explorer.exe explorer.exe /root,,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Just click next until you’re done with it. It should look like this.

Now we’re going to change the icon. Right click on the shortcut > Properties > Change Icon.

You are going to look for C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll.

Hit Ok, when you’re done, go to Start and click it.

One of the best things about Win8 new task manager is the possibility to edit Startup items easily, fast and without any technical knowledge or tricks. Let me show you how it’s done now.

Open the task manager, just hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc or right click on the task bar > Task Manager. Once it’s open, go to the Startup Tab.

Once there, you’ll see all the programs that start with your computer.

To modify which start and which not, just right click them and select Disable/Enable.

The best part about this is that you can see which programs cause a higher impact during the startup, and disable/enable depending on your needs.

A Task Manager, a tool used by almost everyone who has a PC, no matter what OS you’re using, you like to keep track of you memory and CPU usage, and check the processes to see if there is something infecting your PC. Anyway, the new TaskMan on Win8 is pretty nice and useful, but some will prefer the old one.

The thing that not many will realize is that this new TaskMan is called TM.exe, and that’s the giveaway. The old Task Manager never left Win8, it just doesn’t have a shortcut to easily get it. But is still possible to use it without any problem.

To open it you can do to things. You can open the Run Prompt (Windows key + R) and type “taskmgr.exe”, without the quotes.

Or you can go to “C:\Windows\System32\” and search for “taskmgr.exe” and create a desktop shortcut.

Windows 8 came with a store to download apps to your OS. These apps are mostly useless and keeping them open is just a waste of memory. Anyway, you can disable the store and prevent anyone from downloading apps.

To do this you need to open the Group Policy Editor, AKA “gpedit.msc”.

Then, go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Store.

In there, double click on Turn off the Store application and set it to Enabled.

Click Ok, close the Editor and restart your PC. From now on the Store will be unavailable. Do this only if you don’t anyone to download apps to the PC, even you.

Darik’s Boot and Nuke is a simple ISO image that when booted, it will delete all your data permanently. Let me put it this way:

DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect.

This is one of the most dangerous and useful tools that you’ll ever find. Just download it, burn it, boot it, and say goodbye to all the data stored on that computer. Also, the data is safely wiped, meaning that will be unrecoverable. The point of doing this is that DBAN was created to wipe HD that people sells or give away, and this is a good way of keeping your privacy… private.

If you download it, be careful, as the warning says “Burn this file to a blank disc and boot the computer with it. Do not unzip this file.”

If you’re using Windows 8, you may find sometimes that the F8 key no longer works, instead it was changed to Shift+F8, and even knowing that it some cases it won’t work because the OS won’t start your keyboard soon enough to send the keys. But that won’t happen to everyone, but in case you do, there is a way to start Win8 using the recovery tool.

The most easiest way is opening the command prompt and typing

shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00

/r = restart the computer

/f = close all open programs

/o = restart with recovery options

/t = timeout period before restarting

Now, in case you don’t remember this options, there is another way to do it. Hover your mouse in the upper right corner and open Windows settings. Then click on More PC Settings.

In there go to the General Tab, and scroll down.

The extension works simply by hovering the mouse over the image and waiting 1 second until the image appears. Why the wait? Well, I think that zooming every image you hover immediately would be annoying.

You can customize the extension with several different options, such as change the time that the image will take to load, default zoom, you can even filter the extension per site, meaning that it will work in some sites and it won’t in others.

This is something that completely change the way we use Windows, it’s one of the most amazing features so far, and it’s way helpful if you don’t want to waste a CD/DVD just to burn a game or doesn’t want to install extra software on your PC. Now, with Windows 8, mounting a drive is the easiest thing in the world.

For this feature to work we must make sure that the .iso format is associated with Windows explorer. Unlike XP and 7, Win8 doesn’t allow any software to associate with any file that is associated with an already installed app (like VLC won’t associate with .mp3 files because of the Music app). But still, there are cases that WinRaR or Nero will associate with it.

To fix it, right click on the file > Open with > Choose default program…

In there, select Windows Explorer.

Now, when everything is set and done, click on the ISO file and go to the ribbon. You’ll see “Disc Image Tools”, click on Actions then on Mount.

It will instantly open and appear on your list of drives.

To eject it just select Disk Tools, and click Eject, and you’re done.
