Something you should know about Win8 is that is designed for tablets, that’s why some features may be weird on a desktop, starting for the lack of the multi-app or multi-windowed feature; the one that allow you to have several apps/windows at the same time in the screen. In case there is, I haven’t found yet.

Anyway, another thing, since we don’t have touch in a desktop, here’s how to switch apps. Move your mouse to the left-center side of the screen until the app thumbnail appear.

Then, just drag it to the window and drop it.

And to switch back, is the same deal. Move the mouse to the left, then drag and drop.

As I said, although you can maintain the window hovering for a while, there is no option to make it multi-windowed. That’s something I hope to found later or just to wait until it gets added.

One of the things that we were expecting about Win8 is the new ribbon interface. Since the success this interface had on Microsoft Office, they decided to also apply it to Windows itself. When you take a look at it, it may be weird, but is actually pretty useful and organized.

Of course, like Office, there is an option to hide it and save some space on the screen.

But the thing I liked the most, was the quick access buttons at the top of the window.

And again, as Office, you can customize which items you want in it, saving you a lot of work when managing files and folders. Another thing that pretty nice are the redesign of the close, minimize and maximize buttons; they just look better .

Today I was moving some files on Windows 8 and instantly I noticed one of the most needed, asked and required features on Windows since the beginning of times, a Pause button .

I still remember when I’m transferring files between hard drives and the system slows down since the bus it’s being used completely, and I can’t cancel it since the files are big (usually over 2Gb), and start the process again is always annoying.

Finally we will be able to pause this transfer and then restore whenever we’re ready for it. One of the most awesome features in Win8 so far, or at least one of the most necessary ones.

This is a trick that those who install Windows 8 from scratch will need to know. There is no start menu, so there is no “Show on desktop” option, meaning that going into “Computer” will be a mess for those who have not so many technical knowledge. Anyway, here’s a little trick you can use.

Right click on any part of the desktop, then Personalize.

In there, click on “Change desktop icons” to select which icons will be show by default.

Then just check on the ones you want and hit “Ok”.

This is a trick that exists also on Windows7, but will be most used on Win8 since the lack of the start menu will be something that most users will complain about, when actually there is no need for it when you actually don’t have it.

So, if you just installed Windows8, you’d noticed that there is no start menu. This is very confusing for those who just started using it since we’ll all miss that feature. But still, there is a way to turn of the system without hitting the power button or logging off.

First, hover your mouse on the bottom left corner of any window. It can be desktop, the tiles screes, or an app. Just hover it

A little menu will popup from the left, click on settings.

Then, a large one will appear from the right, you’ll see the Power option and five more.

And from there you’ll be able to turn it off, restart it or set it to sleep.

Windows8 looks great. Nice buttons, nice animations, but it has some flaws. I’ll try to post more about these the next week. Have a nice weekend, everyone.

Finally, Windows 8 is here. And although the download links were released a few days ago, I finally build up the courage to actually post these and download it myself. And quickly, here are the only three downloads available of Windows 8:

Windows Developer Preview with developer tools English, 64-bit (x64)

Windows Developer Preview English, 64-bit (x64)

In case you’re wondering if your PC will be able to run it, these are the minimum system requirements for Windows 8, which is the same of Windows 7:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

I just installed Windows 7 and a thing always do after a fresh install is to disable things I don’t need. One of the things I do is release some space so I always have the most space available and give the Hard Drive less things to work with, AKA improving HD performance. To release space quickly, the first thing you should do is disable the hibernation, which comes by default enabled in this OS and it will take over 1.2Gb of space on a fresh install, and a lot more over time.

You should recognize the file easily, it’s called hiberfil.sys.

So, how to delete it and at the same time disable the hibernation?

Open the command prompt and type: powercfg -h off

Immediately you’ll see that the file is gone and you have over 1Gb of space free in your Hard Drive. Also, hibernation has been disabled.

I have to say that I was one of those who hated Windows 7 Favorites section. I considered that was a waste of time and never took the time to actually tested fully. Until a while ago by accident I move a folder in there and saw that it was really helpful to have a way to quickly access it.

Just drag and drop the folder(s) that you most use into the Favorites section.

You can change the name or the order of those folders since these are only shortcuts and can be customized and modified as you want.

Keep it in mind when you’re doing a project and need a quick access to most used folders.

This is one of the most funniest and amazing tricks to customize Win7. Nyan Cat is a very popular meme around the Internet and a programmer find the way to introduce it into our progress bar with a cool little portable program called Nyan Cat Progress Bar.

I can’t even tell you how funny and amazing this change is because you have to see it and listen it for yourself. Yes, it even brings a very funny music theme that will repeat until the task you’re doing ends.

This has now become a must have program in my PC. It will make your day. Only works in Win7.

A nice thing about Windows XP that 7 doesn’t have is that you can disable Windows Help and Support very easily, but in 7 you can’t because Windows doesn’t provide that feature or option. In my case, I use a lot the Escape and F2 buttons, so you should guess how often the F1 button get pressed.

Anyway, I found a way to disable it very easily and permanently. First of all, download Unlocker and install it. Then go to the Windows folder (usually ”C:\Windows\”).

Now, look for these two files: HelpPane.exe and winhlp32.exe.

Select them and then open Unlocker trough the context menu, and select “Move”, move them to your desktop.

The files should now be in your desktop, and the F1 button won’t do nothing, no matter how many times you hit it.

You can delete, backup or rename those files. Anyway, help won’t be displayed until those two are back in the Windows folder.
